Maundy Thursday 18th April 2019

Luke 22:46 Could you not watch with me one hour?

Anyone who has been with someone who is going through pain,
be it physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual,
will know how difficult it is just to sit with them and watch,
knowing there is nothing we can do.
We like to be practical, we like to be positive, we like to help;
the hardest thing in the world is feeling useless and helpless,
and just sitting there, just being there.
When Jesus was going through his anguish in the garden of Gethsemane
that is all he wanted from his friends; just to be there and watch with him.
But, gosh, that is so difficult to do.
The art of prayer, the art of true compassion,
is learning how to just be with people, and to be with God,
without any solutions, without any magic formula, without words,
and simply to hold them and the situation in love.
We don’t have to have the answer, we simply need to love.
